Warm introductions or LinkedIn cold messages, what actually works in Sydney?

Scott Cundill · 2026-10-29 · Sydney

Warm introductions win, and not by a little. A cold message to a busy Sydney director might get a polite reply, if you are lucky. An introduction from someone they already trust usually gets a coffee, often within the week.

Why Sydney ignores the cold message

Picture a marketing head in a North Sydney tower. Her phone buzzes forty times before the ferry reaches Circular Quay, half of it from strangers who "loved her profile". Australians are friendly, but they are allergic to anything that sounds rehearsed. A template message, however clever, reads like a template.

What a warm introduction carries

When a mutual contact writes "you two should meet, here is why", three things come with it: a reason, a bit of borrowed trust, and a small social nudge to reply. That is a lot of weight for two lines of text.

When cold outreach still has a place

Cold messages are fine for a quick question, for following up after an event, or when you truly know nobody nearby. Keep them short, specific and human, never pasted. But if a warm path exists, take it.

How to find the warm path

Write down five people you would love to meet. Then look at who you both know, a former colleague, an accountant, a client, a neighbour from the same Saturday cricket. Most Sydney business circles overlap more than you think, across the harbour and out to the west.

Asking the Exchange for a referral

Tell the Sydney Introductions Exchange who you want to reach and why it would help them as much as you. If a member genuinely knows that person, they write a short introduction to both of you. Nobody sells contacts, nobody fires off introductions for sport, and every one is made by a real person putting their name to it.
