How do you find your next role in Manila through people you know?

Scott Cundill · 2026-10-29 · Metro Manila

Mostly through people who already know your work and are happy to say so. In Metro Manila, plenty of good roles are filled through a referral from a friend, a former manager, a classmate or a relative's colleague, often before anyone writes a job ad. Knowing that is not a reason to stop applying online. It is a reason to spend just as much time on the people around you.

Why referrals matter so much here

Filipino business culture is deeply relational. Employers want to know who you are, how you work and whether you will fit the team, and a recommendation from someone they trust answers all three at once. The spirit of *bayanihan*, neighbours lifting a house together, runs through working life too.

Start with people who have seen you work

Former bosses, colleagues, clients and teachers are your best supporters, because they can speak to what you actually do. Get back in touch warmly, not only when you need something.

Be clear about what you want

"Any job" is hard to help with. "A marketing role in a fintech company in BGC" is easy. The more specific you are, the faster someone thinks, "Ah, I know exactly who you should talk to."

Make it easy to recommend you

Have a short, up to date summary of your experience that a friend can forward in one message. Keep your LinkedIn profile current and honest.

Ask for advice, not a job

"Could I ask your advice about moving into logistics?" opens far more doors than "Do you have a job for me?" Advice conversations often turn into referrals on their own.

Give back

Share openings you hear about, introduce friends to each other, and thank people who help. Generosity travels fast in Manila.

How does the network pass on referrals?

Members of Manila Business Connect say who they hope to meet, whether that is a client, a partner, an employer or a great hire. A member who genuinely knows that person introduces them both in a short note. Nobody is selling a list, and nobody is pushed into a conversation that would not help them.

The club is led by four Super Connectors, Francis Manlapaz, RJ Geotina, Kristine Ann Aganon and Christopher Santos, who have spent years opening doors for others in Metro Manila.

Write down the one company you would most love to work for, and ask your circle who might already know someone there. Your next role may be one message away.
